Preventative Measures

Given the unfortunate troubles the forum has had with this %#*@& hacker, I thought it might be a good idea to have a back-up plan in case it happens again.

I'm able to print a list of Members, but I just get screen names. If you would like to have your personal email address added to my list, please PM me with it. By having a list of screen names and email addresses, I'd be able to contact members via email in the event the site goes down for an extended period of time...could turn out to be pretty helpful, especially if it should happen right before an outing or during 'critical' planning stages.

The email addresses will not be stored in my PC, but on paper, in order to minimize any risk of the addresses being hacked, spammed, etc. And they will ONLY be used for GLPUC business, you have my word. Any emails I would send would be sent "blindly" (no other members included in the email would be able to see your address).

Let's keep our fingers crossed that this "person" leaves us alone this time.

2013 Rally - Hosted by Indiana

Just wanted to plant the idea in the back if your minds...next year's Rally will be held in Indiana. Traditionally, the host state votes on potential locations by late fall/early winter in order to narrow the field down to between 3 and 5 campgrounds, which will then be put up for vote by all states to determine the winning location. The full GLPUC vote will be held the first of January to allow a winner to be determind prior to the 6-month reservation window opening up.

As you begin your 2012 camping adventures, take notes of campgrounds/parks that show Rally potential. It'd be great, when we begin talking specifics, to have info such as pros & cons, type of facilities, activities/attractions in the vicinity, and number of sites in the CG. If you happen to try a 'new' CG this year, by all means, give us the full Siskel & Ebert review on it! Any and ALL input will be welcomed.

I know it seems early, but it's practically April, so we essentially have about 6 months to scout out locations before putting them up for Indiana voting! This is YOUR Rally--I'm just a moderator-- I look forward to lots of great suggestions and ideas and working with you all to put on another awesome IN Rally!

Mounds State Park, located off I-69 east of Anderson, features 10 unique earthworks built by prehistoric Indians known as the Adena-Hopewell people. The largest earthwork, the Great Mound, is believed to have been constructed around 160 B.C. Archaeological surveys indicate the mounds were used as gathering places for religious ceremonies, from where astronomical alignments could be viewed.
Be sure to visit our the new interpretive center, which includes a wildlife viewing room, animal displays, interactive games and more. Hours are 11 am – 4 pm daily from November to March and 9 am to 5 pm daily. Also, take a tour of the newly-restored Historic Bronnenberg House which highlights this 1800's family and their stewardship of the mounds.
Ouabache is difficult to spell, but easy to pronounce. Simply say 'Wabash'...just like the river that forms the southwest boundary for the park. This is the French spelling of an Indian word, so don't be surprised to hear some folks call it o-ba-chee.
Kunkel Lake offers excellent fishing. During the summer months, a naturalist will provide information about the natural wonders of the park. A lodge recreation building is ideal for special gatherings and is now available all year.

The Spring Opener for the IN Chapter will be held at Versailles State Park.

Host: Nuts4campin.

Friday, April 6 - Sunday, April 8, 2012

Take a drive through the beautiful rolling hills of southeastern Indiana with Versailles State Park, Indiana's second-largest state park, as your destination. This area has deep history rooted in both the Civil War and the Civilian Conservation Corps. Versailles State Park dedicated a CCC commemorative statue in 2010. Numerous fossils tell the story of an ancient sea that covered the region. During the Civil War, Morgan's Raiders made their way through the area that is now the park. The town of Versailles was briefly under Confederate control. Relax while fishing on the 230-acre lake where you can rent a paddleboat, rowboat, kayak or canoe. Get a workout and see the beauty of the park by taking a walk on the hiking trails or a ride on the mountain bike trails.

Reservations are not accepted for April...sites are first come, first served.
Nuts4campin will post the area to aim for, although it's highly suggested to stay in site B. (Parts of Loop A are hard to navigate with a camper, and many of the sites are suitable for tents only.)

haroldpe will be hosting an outing at Pokagon State Park on May 4-6, 2012.

Pokagon State Park is located near Angola, just off I-69. The park was originally called Lake James State Park when proposed to be the fifth Indiana State Park in 1925. The name was changed to Pokagon State Park to acknowledge the rich Native American heritage of the state and region. Leopold and Simon Pokagon were father and son and the last two most notable leaders of the Potawatomi. The park's Potawatomi Inn takes its name from these Native Americans, who made their home in the area. Natural lakes created by glaciers that melted 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, highlight Steuben County, which has more lakes than any other Indiana county. The park is framed by Lake James and Snow Lake, which offer abundant opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing and scenic sunsets.
She asked if I could give her a call back in a week-10 days to let her know if we'd be returning and if so, with a guess-timate of how many rooms we might be needing.
