Starved Rock is a great park for hiking, history, and child's play. There is a nice playground within the campground and hiking trails for all levels of ability. Nearby Matthiessen State Park http://dnr.state.il....R1/mttindex.htm offers hikers a unique look at mother nature's ability to slice a gorge out of the landscape.

The whole islands is closed off Saturday evening for the Trick or Treater's. The last time Laura and I camped at this event we had near 300 kids pass by our candy bowl.
Reservations for this event will be six months prior. This is a popular event, I suggest we be ready and prepared to make our reservations as soon as they are available.

It’s part of my attempt to persuade/drag the northern folks south to experience the Central Illinois area. Comlara Park is located in McLean County, north of Bloomington, Illinois just off I-39. (Please see the directions on the Parks and Recreation link) The campground is spacious compared to most parks I’ve camped and most sites have partial shade. They have 50 and 30 ampere sites with both pull through and back in. Some sites you WILL need an extension cord to hook up to the electric box (One box located between two sites). Water is available at the dump station (located at the pool/lake area parking lot) and in various areas of the campground. The shower house is dated but clean. Campground reservations are by phone or mail only. Phone reservations start April 7 and mail in April 9 they take both Visa and Master Card. The phone number is: (309) 434-6770. Depending on the interest will dictate our site location. However I would suggest we stay on sites: 1 – 33 and 34 – 80. (Avoid 28-31sloping site)

I will be hosting this event. The Balloon Fest outing is scheduled for the weekend of August 17-19, 2012. We will be camping along with members of the ORCC (Off Roads Camping Club) and PopupPortal. If you are interested in camping with us we will be camping in the full hookup loop and along the lake front. You will be able to make reservations February 17.

Just East of the Stagecoach Trail, the drive from Lena to Galena is simply breathtaking, but don't get too distracted by the views, it's a winding, twisting, turning journey back to the time of the great explorers.

Pedestrian and Equestrian trails wander throughout the property of this park. Additionally, there is a small beach and swimming area in the lake. Fish are plentiful in the lake, so don't forget your fishing poles.

RV, tent, equestrian and youth groups are all accommodated in the various campgrounds. While there are just a few secluded sites, the majority are open and spacious with adequate shade available on most.

Located, oddly enough, in Morrison, IL, this park is nestled south of Galena and Savanna, IL and just a bit East of the Mississippi river. Adventures in this part of the state are numerous with quaint towns dotting the landscape and majestic views throughout the area. Historic Galena, IL is about an hour from this park as is the Mississippi River Museum just over the river in Iowa. Fishermen can launch their boats into the big muddy from many public and private launch sites within minutes of the campground. Personally I have not camped at this park yet. Please leave a post on the best site locations for our group.

I will start off with two suggestions:

As usual Laura and I and the ORCC (Off Roads Camping Club from Missouri) are hosting the Centralia Balloon Festival 17,18 and 19 August 2012. This years event will be held at Boulder COE Campground at Carlyle Lake. My other suggestion for this season will be a weekend at Comlara Park Campground near Bloomington, Illinois.
