We have had to change campers again due to fuel mileage and handling. We are picking up our 21 ft. Fun Finder today. It is 1200 lbs lighter than the North Country, lower and more aerodynamic. We want to get back to the east coast and this was our only option. Hope to see you all soon.

Algae Water alert

I saw this online today and thought I should share it.. .Glad to discover Salt Fork was not on the list.

Algae Advisory Update

Cyanobacteria, often referred to as blue-green algae are bacteria that are naturally found in Ohio lakes, ponds and slow-moving streams. While not harmful by itself, blue-green algae has the potential to grow toxins that could be harmful to both human and pet health.

If ODNR recognizes an algal bloom in a state body of water, cautionary signs will be posted indicating that harmful algae may be present and individuals and their pets should avoid contact with the algae and the water until the state can confirm that blue-green algae bloom is present.

If you notice blue-green algae, please be advised to avoid direct contact with it and the water that it is in. Also, similar to any other untreated open water body, avoid ingesting any water.

Blue-green algae grows into “blooms” through photosynthesis when the weather is hot and there is enough sunlight. Hotter weather and more sunlight allow the “blooms” to grow larger and more rapidly. These “blooms” are of highest concern because they can produce neurotoxins (which affect the nervous system) and hepatotoxins (which affect the liver).

If it is confirmed as a blue-green algal bloom, the body of water will be tested for the presence of toxins. If toxins are present, ODNR will post stricter signs advising users not to contact the water for various activities, including swimming, fishing, and boating.

Here are the current advisory levels for state owned bodies of water:

No Contact Advisory
Grand Lake St. Marys An algae bloom has made this area unsafe for recreational activities. You are strongly advised to avoid any & all contact with or ingestion of the lake water. This includes the launching of any watercraft on the lake.
Cutler Lake (at Blue Rock State Park)

Toxin Advisory
Burr Oak State Park An algae bloom has made this area potentially unsafe for water contact. Avoid direct contact with the water.

Bloom Advisory
Deer Creek State Park An algae bloom has made this area potentially unsafe for water contact. Avoid direct contact with visible surface scum.
** Lake Erie Bloom

Dillon State Park
East Harbor**
Lake Hope
Lake Loramie
Maumee Bay State Park
Shawnee State Park (golf course pond)
West Branch State Park

Not surprisingly, given that this summer has been hot with many sunny days, blue-green algae has grown at a number of waterbodies throughout the state. Regardless of the body of water you are considering using for recreation, everyone is encouraged to avoid blue-green algae if you see it on the water. If you do see blue-green algae, or what you think may be blue-green algae, Ohio EPA has a harmful algae bloom report form that can be submitted on where and when the algae was witnessed so that further investigation can be taken.

Aditional information and data on Harmful Algal Blooms is online at:

Ohio #6 Central Outing Location Poll

Again - most people are familiar.
http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/dee...25/Default.aspx

Mohican Adventures - private campground with 65 full hook-up sites, lake and cabins. Also has an indoor pool. The Loudonville Street Fair is going on at the time. If this is chosen - they can put us all in an area. Pricing - $10. per site PLUS - $10. per adult and $5. per child. So if it is a family of 4 - it would be $40. for the night.
http://www.mohicancanoe.com/index.html

Dogwood Valley - private campground with 200 sites. 139 choices are Water and Electric. BOOKING ODDITY (if you ask me) - they want you to pre-pay by sending a check, not using a credit card. They also have only 1 shower house - but Stephanie Camp Happy 1999 -said this has never been an issue.
http://www.3smiths.com/page.php?page_id=25

So all of these private campgrounds seem nice and look to be beautiful. - Mohican and Smith's are in Ashland County and Dogwood is a bit further south in Morrow County. I looked at the Logan/Hocking KOA and for our outing, as of today, they only have 3 pop up sites and 4 rv sites. Not enough open for us to consider this campground. Paint Creek State Park is also almost filled. They are down to 6 pet sites and 7 non pet sites as of today. I am afraid we will need to exclude these from the vote. I also called several other private campgrounds and they are also either limited or no sites.

The good news is that Hocking Hills State Park has over 40 sites open in the pet area, Shawnee State Park also has over 40 pet sites open and Salt Fork has over 50. I am throwing in Longs Family Retreat as my suggestion. They do not take reservations so as long as you get there early there are no concerns on getting a site. Their website states they have "modern" restrooms. Vince has said that the restrooms are pretty bad. I just called and they told me that the restrooms have been updated within the last 1.5 years. Not sure if to them modern means no hole in the ground or if they really have updated. Check out the link with their website and decide for yourself if this may be a place to go to.

Soooo, unless we have any other suggestions by tomorrow, the voting will be for

Longs Family Retreat

Salt Fork State Park

Shawnee State Park

Hocking Hills State Park

This poll closes 6/20/2010 at 11:59 PM
